Flume

To download Peter Gabriel's cover of Bon Iver's Flume, sign up here.

All of Post Secret's posted secrets were great today. But this one hit home.

I didn't know anything at 22, and now just days before my 26th birthday, I must admit to not knowing that much more.

Maybe xkcd will shed some light with scientific prove of love.

In the movie Lars and the Real Girl, an important point was made about growing up. It's one of those things that sticks with me.

Lars Lindstrom: I was talking to Bianca, and she was saying that in her culture they have these rites of passages and rituals and ceremonies, and, just all kinds of things that, when you do them, go through them, let you know that you're an adult? Doesn't that sound great?

Gus
: It does.

Lars Lindstrom
: How'd you know?

Gus
: How'd I know what?

Lars Lindstrom
: That you were a man

Gus
: Ahhh. I couldn't tell ya.

Lars Lindstrom
: Was it... okay, was it sex?

Gus
: Um. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's uh, yeah, yeah it's kind of - it's uh - no. Well, it's kind of sex but it's not uh, you know? I don't know. I don't know. It's - uh - good question, good question.

Lars Lindstrom
: Yeah, but I have to know

Gus
: [dryer buzzes] Hold that thought.

Gus
: [in basement] You know, you should ask Dagmar

Lars Lindstrom
: I did ask Dagmar. And she said that I should ask you.

Gus
: Okay, you know I can only give you my opinion.

Lars Lindstrom
: That's what we want

Gus
: Well, it's not like you're one thing or the other, okay? There's still a kid inside but you grow up when you decide to do right, okay, and not what's right for you, what's right for everybody, even when it hurts.

Lars Lindstrom
: Okay, like what?

Gus
: Like, you know, like, you don't jerk people around, you know, and you don't cheat on your woman, and you take care of your family, you know, and you admit when you're wrong, or you try to, anyways. That's all I can think of, you know - it sound like it's easy and for some reason it's not.
Sometimes you want to make the people you love happy. But then you look at all the facts, you count the number of times you've hurt them and as much as you want to keep trying to get things right you realize they just may be better off without you. And that's love. Just love of a different sort.

Sweet Disposition

What an odd week. An odd week, indeed.

I had an emergency trip to see Dr. James Brown today. It's worth the co-pay just to hear him crack jokes. I'm okay. Finally finding a doctor that puts me at ease in such a hellish place feels great.

This is pretty pimp.

Finally saw (500) Days of Summer. Great movie. The boys were stuuuuuupid for not wanting to see it. I want a chalk board wall, I will have a chalk board wall. It was pretty great that the next day after seeing the movie, this song was the first song I heard at work.

I like it when cool things like that happen.

Speaking of cool things: My friend just asked me what time the midnight showing of The Wolfman was . . . I let him think that question over.

The Weary Kind

Oh goodness I'm slacking. Please go see Crazy Heart. Go. Now.

Your heart’s on the loose/ You rolled them seven’s with nothing to lose/ And this ain’t no place for the weary kind

Full lyrics

I'm not a fan of the stint in rehab (seemed rushed and too easy) nor am I a fan of the ending but . . . everything else was bad ass Bad Blake.

Thanks Mom

My mother and I have our differences. But she introduced me to all things good growing up like . . .

Murder She Wrote--- Angela Lansbury for life.
Dusty Springfield
Ewoks --- My little brother and I still just walk by one another sometimes and say "Wicket." And we know. Good times. Fun fact, we saw the second Ewok movie before the first. You can imagine how much that fucked with us. Keep in mind I cried so hard when Bambi's mother was shot my mother had to turn the movie off. Same thing with the Land Before Time when Little Foot lost his folks. We saw the movie during nap time and I cried myself to sleep.
Agatha Christie--- Don't fuck with Miss Marple.
Connie Francis
Rosemary Clooney--- My favorite episode of ER is when she guest starred. I almost cried . . . okay, I did.

And so much more.

Including my love of Saturday afternoon movies. There's nothing I love more than getting to come home on a Saturday afternoon, kicking my shoes off, curling up on the couch and putting myself at the mercy of cable television. It's the best.

All work and no play

I haven't had a day off since last Tuesday--- and I stayed home to clean so . . .

Midnight showing of Zombieland with some sexy Dominican I know. Some lady at work naturally assumed I'd go see "Whip It" over "Zombieland" to which all I can reply is, "Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray trump Drew Barrymore and I-don't-even-give-a shit-what-her-name-is-chick-from-Juno." But she was tops in "Hard Candy." Seriously, everyone see her in that. Is she going to torture potential sex-offenders in Whip It? No, she's going to dye her hair, piss her mother off and join a roller derby team. Hmmmmm, I see that kind of stuff at the Marsh all the time. Nah, I'll wait till my friend Sara forces me to see it with her, sorta like Juno (thank goodness J.K. Simmons was in that movie, that's all I'm saying). They used to have a reality show on A&E centered around roller derby girls . . . now that was quality T.V.

Anywho today I met Dr. James Brown. But it turns out I already knew him. He's one of those dads that comes into the store terrified because he has no idea how to shop for his kids. I help him out all the time. He complimented my hair cut . . . while he gave me a breast exam. FML. I need to move . . . oh wait . . .

Update: Let me be clear . . . if I was snuggled up in Sara's bed with a 40, a Drew Barrymore eve it would be. But I'd rather see Zombies get pianos dropped on them on the big screen than a lot of hipsters and camel toe (again, I see enough at work).

The smell of death lingers . . .

RIP Jim Carroll

8 Fragments For Kurt Cobain

1/
Genius is not a generous thing
In return it charges more interest than any amount of royalties can cover
And it resents fame
With bitter vengeance

Pills and powdres only placate it awhile
Then it puts you in a place where the planet's poles reverse
Where the currents of electricity shift

Your Body becomes a magnet and pulls to it despair and rotten teeth,
Cheese whiz and guns

Whose triggers are shaped tenderly into a false lust
In timeless illusion

2/
The guitar claws kept tightening, I guess on your heart stem.
The loops of feedback and distortion, threaded right thru
Lucifer's wisdom teeth, and never stopped their reverbrating
In your mind

And from the stage
All the faces out front seemed so hungry
With an unbearably wholesome misunderstanding

From where they sat, you seemed so far up there
High and live and diving

And instead you were swamp crawling
Down, deeper
Until you tasted the Earth's own blood
And chatted with the Buzzing-eyed insects that heroin breeds

3/
You should have talked more with the monkey
He's always willing to negotiate
I'm still paying him off...
The greater the money and fame
The slower the Pendulum of fortune swings

Your will could have sped it up...
But you left that in a plane
Because it wouldn't pass customs and immigration

4/
Here's synchronicity for you:

Your music's tape was inside my walkman
When my best friend from summer camp
Called with the news about you

I listened them...
It was all there!
Your music kept cutting deeper and deeper valleys of sound
Less and less light
Until you hit solid rock

The drill bit broke
and the valley became
A thin crevice, impassible in time,
As time itself stopped.

And the walls became cages of brilliant notes
Pressing in...
Pressure
That's how diamonds are made
And that's WHERE it sometimes all collapses
Down in on you

5/
Then I translated your muttered lyrics
And the phrases were curious:
Like "incognito libido"
And "Chalk Skin Bending"

The words kept getting smaller and smaller
Until
Separated from their music
Each letter spilled out into a cartridge
Which fit only in the barrel of a gun

6/
And you shoved the barrel in as far as possible
Because that's where the pain came from
That's where the demons were digging

The world outside was blank
Its every cause was just a continuation
Of another unsolved effect

7/
But Kurt...
Didn't the thought that you would never write another song
Another feverish line or riff
Make you think twice?
That's what I don't understand
Because it's kept me alive, above any wounds

8/
If only you hadn't swallowed yourself into a coma in Roma...
You could have gone to Florence
And looked into the eyes of Bellinni or Rafael's Portraits

Perhaps inside them
You could have found a threshold back to beauty's arms
Where it all began...

No matter that you felt betrayed by her

That is always the cost
As Frank said,
Of a young artist's remorseless passion

Which starts out as a kiss
And follows like a curse

Check out the Village Voice.

And the Frank in the above poem is in reference to Frank O'Hara, oh my heart.

Speaking of Frank's heart, I had the immediacy of a bad movie . . . the big overproduced first-run kind this weekend. But don't take my word for it, here's what a real critic had to say about a film I'm so indifferent to it's not worth mentioning the title.

On a related note: Who's ever heard of one critic seeing or not seeing a movie based on the opinion of another critic? I'm not saying you should see a movie you don't want to see, I'm just asking since when do you need the opinion of another to back it up? We are such odd creatures . . .

The movie 9 was not without its flaws (the ending and the storyline being huge ones). But I think that any movie that touches upon the fear of too many technological advances being our downfall is NOT something to be overlooked. There was a certain earnest naivety to the film that I sort of enjoyed. I just wished Acker had woven it in deeper into the storyline and characters . . . it was just sort of there, looming over the film attached to a few anchoring words and phrases such as, "pieces of my soul." Don't take my word for it, see it for yourself and then tell me Acker didn't base 3 and 4 on my favorite Jersey born female twin savants Flo and Kay.

This Celtics Blog "POst" by Master PO made me smile. How is the view from that Lone Dr. Seuss Truffula Tree?

Simile time: Love is like a Brontosaurus. Sex is like a Velociraptor.

tunes from the left end, While You Wait for the Others, Grizzly Bear. Make it all worth while.
You Can Make Him Like You, The Hold Steady.
Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors, Radiohead.
Ocean Breathes Salty, Modest Mouse. You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

Promises to Myself

I will only work where the "every day" people are as crazy and nutty as the people who work and shop at the Marsh.

I will be selectively literal until the day I die.

I will be glad for each day, good or bad.

I will give people a chance, even the ones I hate right off the bat (case and point, my friend Sara . . . "hate" is a strong word).

I will never be good about keeping the cell phone near me, but I'll get better at returning phone calls/texts.

I will not worry about the "boy" thing. They come (no pun intended) and go at will, and I'll always be inclined to let them.

I will always "honor" the wing man role, and wish I could be a better one for Reysons. Bro's before ho's . . . knowing full well, your "bro's" will always fall back in support of you finding love, never hinder.

I will never blame some one, anyone, for my actions or "lonely no action." Ever.

Damn be this wind.

With a little help from the Postman, Fritz Lang and Townes Van Zandt are making their way to Fearless this week. Yesssss.

Please be happy for me.

The references in "Funny People" were enough to choke me up.

I love my rat

People sucked . . . as always today.
But laughing in the face of negativity and enjoying good company tends to make any crummy day good. Forgot how much of a sucker I am for the movie, Ratatouille, especially this scene with Peter O'Toole's character, Anton Ego.

It was directed by his brother . . . come on now.

People always like to categorize themselves into groups in hopes that they'll be understood. This is crap. If someone won't spend time with you . . . they won't understand you. I understand it's easier to have some sort of discussion prompt, "Oh hey the Boss is a real jerk." "Did you understand what the Professor said?" "How about those Pat's?" etc. I think, again, this is bull shit. Some of the people I love hanging out with the most, I have the least in common with. When you work with someone or go to school with someone you get a chance to bond. If you don't well . . .

That being said, my friend from NH and I have heavily debated this next topic sitting in traffic in Boston (the only time things like this should really be debated, when you have nothing better to do) . . . there were two camps of kids growing up . . . kids who payed homage to The Karate Kid and kids who payed homage to the lesser known, Sidekicks. The former came out almost a decade before and I will give in to my friend's first argument, that Sidekicks very, well may be a cheap roundhouse-kick knock off of The Karate Kid. But I don't care. Jonathan Brandis (yes the cutie from The Never Ending Story II) was a huge crush of mine. I looked forward to seeing him each week on Sea Quest. His posters had a place next to my Omri Katz posters. Oh how I miss Bop magazine and the 5-7-9 store (Who remembers that place?).

Here are the rest of the arguments

Jonathan is cuter than Ralph.

Sidekicks has Mako AND Chuck Norris, but yet I will agree, even combined they will never trump Pat Morita. Never.

Danika McKellar and hot Asian, teacher babe, Julia Nickson-Soul kind of beat out Elisabeth Shue. Admit it, cute, sassy Winnie Cooper + hot cougar exotic Asianness = far more wet dreams than the girl next door route.

Every kid had day dreams about their heroes. Even though the movie "critic" I'm about to show you shits all over that, Sidekicks makes those dreams a huge part of the movie, and I respect the movie more for it.

Sidekicks was actually a movie for Chuck Norris. And I'm okay with that. It was directed by his brother, I mean come on now.
Let me explain my love of Chuck Norris. He's ridiculous. He's absolutely fucking ridiculous . . . and I don't think he has any idea. I watch Walker: Texas Ranger and die of hysterical laughter. Has anyone ever noticed that Chuck's favorite way to enter a fight scene is cowboy boots first? It's fantastic.

In all actuality The Karate Kid is a better movie (script, acting, directing . . . etc). That's probably why it was never on the shelf of VideoCraze by the time my brother and I got there. But Sidekicks always was--- it was a sure thing. And when you're like . . . 10, you kind of don't give a shit about the things everyone tells you, you should care about. But Chuck Norris was still ridiculous. Again, he's the only one not in on that joke (well him and the whole mid-west, that is). Snark attack!!!

This guy is pretty hilarious.

And my friends Walker and Texas Ranger would like to finish the blog post for me.

No Money Fun

That's right. July 25th. Free.
Cause I love that dirty water . . . Boston you're my home.

On two completely unrelated notes: *batteries not included . . . such a good fucking film. When I watched Be Kind Rewind years and years later, I got the same kind of feeling. I own both films. I feel a BNI x BKR Eve is in order.

And this has been on my mind . . . for a while.

When I say don't test me . . .

I mean don't test me.

For those of you who haven't seen Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, my personal recommendation would be to see it. Or sneak in to see the last 10 minutes of it or so. From the moment Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) meets Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) he is under the impression she doesn't know she's not real and that she has no idea what is going on. He struggles with telling her through the majority of the film. The kicker: she knew, just acted like she didn't . . . it was funner that way. Just as phony as can be, but it wouldn't be make believe if you believed in me. I'm the kind of person that doesn't like to know how the magic trick is performed. I'd prefer to be entertained by it. It's too much . . . enjoy the show.

Up, up, up and Away!!!!

This makes it better.

Tough questions deserve tough answers.

On Twitter Miss Soleil Moon Frye asked sexy birds all over which John Hughes movie earned their top spot out of Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles. Probably one of the toughest questions ever posed . . . in the world let alone the Twittersphere.

I took a dip with the Fail Whale and together we came up with a long, completely non-definitive answer.

Pretty in Pink

Pro's:
  • Molly Ringwald has possibly one of the cutest red-headed bobs in the world and the most appeasing round-pouty lips. And her vintage chic sense of fashion made every little girl dream of playing dress up. Rule No. 1 in fashion, if you believe in the look, haters will be jealous and the right people will dig it.
  • Jon Cryer and his character Duckie. Enough said.
  • This scene.
  • Annie Pot's Wardrobe. Pow. Bam. Boom.
Con's
  • The names Blane and Steff . . . wtf. Oh, Steff as a man's name.
  • And the biggest con, so it really counts as 5, it's an 11 on the heartbreak volume, Duckie doesn't end up with Andie. It still hurts.
The Breakfast Club

Pro's
  • Good golly Miss Molly's in it, but besides her it's just a perfect ensemble cast.
  • Eat my shorts.
  • It takes place in a library. Fucking-A.
Con's
  • Anthony Michael Hall's character "Brian Johnson" flies solo. No love for the geeks.
  • I know I said it was an ensemble cast, but alone, Ally Sheedy's character, "Allison Reynolds" always irked me. No clue why.
  • We watched this film in my high school Health class and everyone took it upon themselves to act out each scene for weeks. For an example of how annoying that can be watch this.
Sixteen Candles

Pro's
Con's
  • Michael Schoeffling never did much for me.
  • They fucking forgot her 16th birthday. That's just upsetting (my family forgot my 12th . . . it wasn't a milestone).
  • Spandau Ballet's "True" is a favorite but . . . compared to the other two movies, its soundtrack is the weakest.
So looking at the lists while Pretty in Pink has more pro's, it also technically has more con's. Like I said a tough question and no definitive answer. Hmph.

Christmas Tree Shop, I heart you

At first I was excited because I saw a few claymation classics on DVD in your "lost but not forgotten" bin, but NOT the Mark Twain one I still watch on VHS. Then I looked up and realized that my mother, Marcelle, was lone gone. I eventually found her overdosed in a corner, her cart overflowing with nautical themed . . . everything. But in the mean time I was left to continue to sift through the DVD/VHS bin. I found Foxy Brown, The Singing Detective AND Krush Groove. I threw Marcelle and her 50 million purchases into Winnie and hauled ass home, beating the rain, my shitty neighbors' brawl (at least one a day now) and arrived just in time to hear Big Jim call all of them, "fucking little pussy cunt bags." Sidenote: The first time I heard my dad drop the "C" bomb I fell off my chair. He wasn't calling Marcelle or I it . . . so . . . and the woman was actually a cunt . . . so . . . Oh and the second time I heard him say it was in reference to some woman behind the counter at the RMV (completely fucking justified). So this was the third time. I am truly blessed.
I couldn't get Krush Groove into the DVD player fast enough. It was everything I could hope for and more. For an instance of more, look here.
I fucking know, right? I've been trying to write a TRUE style O'Hara poem about the death of Jam-Master Jay for months now. This movie definitely helped the creative juices.

Who doesn't love the Fat Boys?

I wish I lived in a place with more two piece Adidas suits running around. . . okay not really . . . okay, actually I do.

I had an afternoon full of Jheri curls, Adidas, and ill beats.
Speaking of illin' the Beastie Boys make a cameo as contestants of a talent show in the movie and are promptly booed off stage. Not that I agree, but it was hilarious.
